NBHWC Exam Day: Timing, Tools, and Test Center Rules- What to Expect

If you’re preparing for the NBHWC exam and working toward your health coaching certification, it’s important to know exactly what to expect on test day. While studying with the right health coaching resources is key, understanding the exam structure, timing, and testing environment can make a huge difference in how confident and calm you feel when it matters most.

In this blog, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know — from how the exam is timed, what materials you’re allowed to use, and how to handle special accommodations, all the way down to what you can (and can’t) bring with you.

NBHWC Exam Format and Timing

The NBHWC exam consists of 150 multiple-choice questions split into two equal sections:

  • Part 1: 75 questions
  • Part 2: 75 questions
  • Time limit: 90 minutes per section (total of 3 hours)

After completing the first section, you’re given a 15-minute break. This break is optional. You can return to your seat early and resume the exam, but if you take longer than 15 minutes, that extra time will be subtracted from your second section.

You cannot extend the break by finishing early — the clock starts once you submit the first part, and the 15-minute countdown begins.

NBHWC & The Prometric Test Center Environment

The National Board Certification for Health Coaches (NBC-HWC) exam is administered at Prometric test centers. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Security Screening:
You’ll be scanned with a wand, asked to empty your pockets, and required to store all personal items in a locker — including phones, smartwatches, wallets, and bags.
  • Monitoring:
The entire testing session is video-recorded, and test center staff regularly walk the room.
  • Allowed at Your Desk:
    • clear water bottle (with a lid and no labels )
    • wedding band (no other jewelry allowed)
    • Whiteboard or laminated paper with a marker (provided by Prometric)

No snacks, watches, or phones are allowed at your desk — not even during breaks.

You can read the full list of rules in Prometric’s Test Center Regulations.

What About the Whiteboard?

Each test-taker is given a dry-erase laminated sheet or whiteboard and a marker, which you’ll keep for the duration of the exam. You may use this for notes, frameworks, or brainstorming during the test.

Many successful exam-takers recommend using the first minute of your test to “brain dump” important concepts like:

  • The Transtheoretical Model stages
  • Motivational Interviewing techniques
  • Appreciative Inquiry (The “5 D” Cycle)
  • Key Health Metrics (A1C, BMI, BP, etc.)

Important: The whiteboard and marker must be returned at the end of the exam. You cannot take them with you.

Average Time to Complete the NBHWC Exam

Completion time varies by individual. Some people finish in just over 2 hours, while others use the full 3 hours. It depends on:

  • How fast you read
  • How many questions you flag and review
  • How much time you spend on tough questions

Test-takers often report taking longer on the first section, then picking up speed in the second half.

Special Accommodations: Start Early

If you require special testing accommodations — such as extended time, assistive technology, or a private testing room — you must apply at least a month in advance.

The approval process requires:

  • Official documentation of your need
  • An application submitted to the NBHWC and Prometric
  • Processing time and confirmation

Don’t wait until the last minute — this process has a paper trail and must be approved before your exam date.

Final NBHWC Exam Day Tips from Coaches Who’ve Been There

Here are some common-sense tips and reminders shared by recent NBC-HWC test-takers:

  • Take a full-length NBHWC practice exam beforehand to simulate timing
  • Memorize key biometrics and guidelines (e.g., A1C, BMI, waist circumference, blood pressure)
  • Know the CDC criteria for common health conditions (heart disease, diabetes, stroke)
  • Get good rest the night before, eat a healthy meal, and stay hydrated
  • Use mindfulness or breathing techniques to stay calm
  • Flag questions you’re unsure of, then return to them with a fresh mind
